You’re coming back from a career break

Parental leave, caring, illness, study. The break is a line, not a story.

The worry is rarely about ability. It is that the time away has become the first thing anyone will notice, and that the answer you give about it will define the rest of the conversation.

In practice a break is the least interesting thing on an executive resume, provided it is handled in one line and the rest of the document is doing its job. The people who struggle are usually the ones who either hide it or over-explain it.

Three things that are true and rarely said

Most of the anxiety here is disproportionate to the actual obstacle.

State it, do not explain it

One dated line — career break, with the reason in two or three words — is enough. A paragraph of justification signals that you think it needs defending, and readers take their cue from you. Leaving it out entirely is worse: an unexplained gap invites a worse assumption than the truth.

Your sector moved less than you fear

Tools change. Judgement does not. Two or three years away from an industry rarely erodes the thing you were actually valued for. What does need refreshing is the evidence — recent, specific, and framed against where the market is now rather than where it was when you left.

Do not undersell on the way back

The most common mistake we see is targeting a level below the one you left, on the theory that it will be an easier return. It is not easier — it reads as a loss of confidence, and it is very difficult to climb back from once you have accepted it.

What this leads to

Coming back after a break, the first question is how long it will take. Here is our answer.

5 daysFirst draft, after your branding sessionDelivery
2 weeksFinalised, polished documents in your handsDelivery
6 weeksMost clients report being in a new role, from receiving their documentsClient reported
Under 3%Clients who have invoked the rework guarantee or asked for a refundFive years, measured

Clients self-report salary increases ranging from $12,000 to $160,000 a year. They also tell us interview invitations pick up noticeably — we have not measured that comprehensively, so we will not put a number on it. The guarantee figure covers five years of engagements and is counted directly; the rest is what clients report back to us.

Coming back at the right level

The document has to argue for where you are going, not where you paused.

The executive packages cover the resume, cover letter and LinkedIn profile together, which matters more here than in most situations — a profile that still shows your last role and nothing since is the first thing anyone checking you will find.
