One test settles it, and it takes ten minutes: build a resume, then try to download a PDF without entering a card. Measured against that test on 18 August 2026, from an Australian connection, three of the ten pass. Kickresume, Novoresume and Canva will let you leave with a document and pay nothing. ResumeMaker charges $29 once and tells you so before you start. The other six hand you a plain-text file, or expire after a week, or keep the download behind a subscription that bills every four weeks.

What each free tier actually gives you

On the currencies. Zety, resume.io and Enhancv price for Australia and displayed A$. Novoresume displayed US dollars. The remaining six showed a bare $ with no currency marker on an Australian connection, so treat those figures as unconfirmed rather than assume they are Australian dollars.

Four weeks is not a month

Start with the trials: A$2.95, A$3.95, $2.95, $1.95. Nobody disputes a charge that size, and nobody remembers it either.

What they roll into is billed every four weeks, and a year holds thirteen four-week cycles, not twelve. Zety at A$34.95 a cycle is about A$454 a year. resume.io at A$32.95 is about A$428. Both land on the card in amounts that read like a streaming service, on a date that moves earlier every month, so no two charges land on the same date.

The same two products sell the same thing outright for a fraction of that: Zety at A$71.40 for a year, resume.io at A$55.95 for a quarter. Resume Genius runs the identical four-weekly cycle at $23.95 against $95.40 for twelve months bought upfront. If you decide to pay, pay for the term, never the cycle. CVmaker at least does not pretend: it advertises no free tier, and after its $1.95 week it bills monthly rather than four-weekly, at $24.95.

Three of them are straight with you

Kickresume answers the question in its FAQ without any throat-clearing: “Can I download it for free? Yes, you can as long as you stick to free customization options.” Four resume templates, four cover letter templates, unlimited downloads.

ResumeMaker lets you build the whole document, AI features included, then asks for $29 once: “pay just $29 when you are ready to download or print. No risk, no subscriptions, no hassle.” That is not a free builder and it never claims to be. It is the cleanest transaction on the list.

Canva is free at A$0 a year, with the full editor, more than 1.6 million templates and nothing charged at export. A paid tier exists; you do not need it to produce a resume.

They are all built for a one-page resume

Novoresume’s free tier caps you at one page. Read that as the design brief for the whole category rather than as a quirk. These products are built for a graduate with one degree, one job and one page to fill, and for that reader they are good and the price is right.

In nearly ten years of writing executive CVs in Australia, the documents that work commonly run three to seven pages, set by the career rather than by a rule. A general manager with four roles, a turnaround, a P&L and a board seat cannot be compressed to one page without deleting the evidence. What survives that compression is job titles. What gets cut is scale — revenue, headcount, budget, sites, jurisdictions — and scale is exactly what a chair or a search consultant is reading for.

Three more habits of these tools work against seniority, and no template fixes any of them. They allocate space evenly, so nine roles get nine equal blocks, when an executive CV should spend most of its first page on the last two roles and put the first fifteen years in three lines. They ask for duties: in the builder-made documents clients bring us, the tool has asked what they were responsible for and never once asked how big it was. And they reward completeness — a progress bar nagging you to fill every field — when seniority is largely a matter of what you leave out: the 1997 diploma, the software list, the responsibilities that were impressive at 28.

If you want a free tool, use one, but choose on the download test rather than the template gallery. Canva if you want to control the layout yourself; Kickresume if you would rather have it decided for you. Both let you download for nothing. If you would rather pay once than subscribe, ResumeMaker’s $29 is the honest option.

Whatever you pick, spend ten minutes proving you can get the document out before you spend an afternoon writing inside it. Create the account, enter one role, press export. A text file, a watermark or a card form at that point has cost you ten minutes instead of a weekend. And if you do take a A$2.95 trial, put the cancellation date in your calendar in the same minute — four-weekly billing is built not to be noticed.

If you are a general manager or above, the tool is the wrong place to start. Write the content first in a plain document: for each role, the title, the organisation, the dates, the size of the thing you ran, and at most two outcomes that would not have happened without you. Get that right and the layout takes twenty minutes in anything, Word included. Get it wrong and no template rescues it.

Deciding which fifteen years to compress, and which two numbers carry the first page, is the actual work. A form cannot do it, and it was never built to. That is the part we sell.
